Project History

The Bear Head LNG project was initiated by prior owners in 2001 as an LNG import facility. The Bear Head LNG project received its environmental permits in 2004 and construction permits in 2005 based upon a Front End Engineering Design (FEED) developed by KBR, Inc. The permitting was for an LNG import terminal that could accommodate a capacity of approximately 11.3 million tonnes per year of LNG. The marine terminal portion of the facility was designed to receive vessels up to 267,000 cubic meters. LNG storage tanks were approved plus additional facilities including water intake and discharge, flare, natural gas and LNG piping, control room and associated systems, safety and fire suppression, and other ancillary equipment and systems were designed and approved.

Construction at the site commenced in 2005 but, as a result of changing energy markets, development of the site was put on hold in 2007. More than US$100 million had been spent on development, engineering and construction.

A final investment decision is expected upon execution of sufficient offtake agreements to support financing, followed by approximately 48 months of project construction allowing for commercial operations at that time.
