  • LNG has a long-standing history in the United States, dating back to the 1940s
  • The LNG industry’s highest priority has always been safety and security, which is reflected in the industry’s enviable safety record
  • LNG is not stored under pressure and it is not explosive in the onshore or on ship storage tanks or if released into the atmosphere. There are no documented cases of LNG explosions in laboratory and open ocean tests - Freeporting Safety Information
  • Technology for transporting and storing LNG has improved immensely over the past 30 years, as have federal and state industrial safety regulations and standards - Freeporting Safety Information
  • LNG ships are double-hulled, with more than six feet of void space or water ballast between the outer and inner hulls and the cargo tanks. The double hulls help to prevent leakage or rupture in the event of an accident. LNG ships are also equipped with sophisticated leak detection technology, emergency shutdown systems, advanced radar and positioning systems, and numerous other technologies designed to ensure the safe and secure transport of LNG
  • Magnolia LNG will participate in all appropriate security, planning, prevention and risk mitigation activities in close coordination with local, state, and federal authorities, including the U.S. Coast Guard
  • Magnolia LNG will use full containment LNG storage tanks -- meaning that the LNG storage tanks will double-walled. Full containment tanks, which are used in many LNG projects, are designed with two nested tanks so that if the inner tank fails, the outer tank is capable of safely containing all of the LNG. The outer tank will be made of pre-stressed concrete. The inner tank will be specially designed to hold the LNG in its cryogenic state and will consist of high-alloy steels with nine percent nickel. The space between the tank shells will be filled with insulation material
  • These modern LNG storage tanks have never had a crack failure in their 30-year history. In addition, tanks are surrounded by embankments large enough to contain the entire contents of the tank
  • Federal regulations require that LNG facilities be surrounded by safety zones with setback distances that are designed to protect people and property in the event of an accident and fire at a LNG facility. Sophisticated safety systems add an additional layer of protection
  • Magnolia LNG’s facility is designed with multiple layers of protection in order to meet rigorous safety regulations. The Project facilities will be designed, constructed, operated, and maintained in strict accordance with Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration Federal Safety Standards for Liquefied Natural Gas Facilities, 49 CFR Part 193. In addition, the Project will be designed to meet all US Coast Guard standards in 33 CFR Part 127, Waterfront Facilities Handling Liquefied Natural Gas and Liquefied Hazardous Gas. The facilities will also meet the National Fire Protection Association 59A LNG Standards
  • Magnolia LNG’s facility will include a hazard detection system that is designed in accordance with National Fire Protection Association requirements and other standards applicable to facilities handling Liquefied Natural Gas. The system will be protective of operations personnel and include early warning hazard detectors that will be installed throughout the facilities
  • The facility will be equipped with redundant spill containment systems; fire protection systems; multiple gas, flame, smoke, leak, toxic, and low- and high temperature detectors and alarms; automatic and manual shut-down systems; and video surveillance systems. These sophisticated systems will be operated by Magnolia LNG’s highly trained personnel to ensure the safe, secure, and environmentally responsible operation of the LNG facility
  • Several different types of fire suppression agents, effective in fighting specific types of fires, will be present in the Project facilities. Hazard control systems will consist of the firewater system; high expansion foam system; sprinkler, water spray, and deluge systems; portable and wheeled fire extinguishers; fail safe shutdown system; and security system
  • The Lake Charles Harbor & Terminal District has instituted a Hurricane Preparation, Response and Recovery Plan. Magnolia LNG will continue to work with the Lake Charles Harbor & Terminal District in accordance with its Plan to ensure the utmost safety in the event of natural disaster - Lake Charles Harbor & Terminal District Hurricane Plan
